80'000 copies and Hungarian rights of Elena Fischer's Paradise Garden sold
We have sold Hungarian rights of Paradise Garden to Helikon, thereby taking up the language count to eleven. As of October, we have sold 80'000 copies of Paradise Garden. Furthermore, she was awarded the debut prize of the ›Literaturwerk Rheinland-Pfalz Saar‹ 2024. With the Italian edition just published, we have received raving press:
»Paradise Garden […], despite the heart-breaking bereavement, has a stylistic freshness and liveliness that overlaps with everything that is mournful, and, sometimes with an extra touch of sugariness, sadness and happiness reveal themselves almost simultaneously.«
Susanna Nirenstein / La Repubblica, Rome
»We can already anticipate that there will be a surprise: the pirouette that will bring both the enchanting girl and the enchanted reader down to the ground of harsh reality. It is a soft landing, an artful caper, a test of balance by the debut novelist who knows how to stop one step before the ice cream becomes too sweet and the story too sugary.« Alessandra Iadicicco / Corriere della Sera: La Lettura

A Refiner's Fire by Donna Leon among the best mystery books of 2024 – and more
Furthermore, Donna Leon has been awarded the ›Bavarian Book Prize of Honour 2024‹. Here's why: »Donna Leon is unrivalled in her ability to bring the allure and magic of Italy to life in her books, and she has been shaping our image of Venice for many years. With Commissario Guido Brunetti, she has created one of the most popular investigators in contemporary crime fiction. She brings him, his colleagues and antagonists to life with great sensitivity, showing their strengths and weaknesses, often with a twinkle in her eye. And of course, there is no Brunetti without Venice. With great attention to detail, Donna Leon presents the city as a vibrant and authentic setting, with its winding alleys, historic buildings, and unique atmosphere, but also its dark sides. She skilfully weaves her exciting plots with profound social criticism and topical issues. With this unique combination, Donna Leon guarantees pure excitement and reading pleasure.«
